Crew has an ulterior motive. It would be one thing if a company like American Apparel had created the size. In that instance, the argument that a company actually wants to wipe out the self-esteem of its customers is more plausible. Yet, J. Crew receives criticism for doing just the opposite. The retailer engages in vanity sizing, a practice in which sizes run large in order to make customers feel better about themselves, and therefore spend more money.
